Overview

False Breakout Trap is a free MT5 indicator that draws breakout arrows on the main chart when a closed bar breaks a swing pivot, prior day, prior week or Donchian level. It then labels each breakout CONFIRMED or FALSE and shades the trap. In the Lab's EURUSD M15 repaint test, 0 of 420 arrows changed or moved after their bar closed. Its panel shows how often breaks of each of four level types have failed recently.

It helps breakout traders who keep getting caught when price breaks a level and then reverses. Before you trust the next break, you can check how often breaks of each level type have failed recently.

What it draws on your chart

A false breakout is a close beyond a level that fails and reverses instead of following through.

  • Bull Breakout / Bear Breakout arrows: a closed bar closed beyond the active upper or lower level by more than BreakoutBufferATRMult x ATR.
  • Breakout Levels: the active upper and lower lines from the level source you choose.
  • Trap Zone: a rectangle from the level to the farthest price reached after the breakout.
  • Breakout Status labels: BREAKOUT while pending, then FALSE (with the trap depth in ATR) or CONFIRMED.
  • Trap Stats panel: the last status, the active levels, the false breakout rate of all four level sources, and the average trap depth in ATR and bars to failure.

How the Lab tested it

The Lab ran version 1.00 on MT5 build 6230. The test used EURUSD M15 from 2026-07-09 to 2026-10-08, with real tick data from Raw Trading Ltd. It logged every arrow as it appeared, then checked whether any arrow changed or moved afterwards. 0 of 420 signals changed, and the maximum arrow delay was 0 bars. An arrow you see on a closed bar stays where it is.

The Lab then measured whether price moved 1 ATR in the arrow's direction before it moved 1 ATR against it. The chart below shows the result for each arrow type.

Arrows where price reached 1 ATR in the arrow's direction before 1 ATR against (EURUSD M15, Lab)Illustration

50.8%
Bear Breakout (227 arrows)
55.5%
All arrows (420)
53.3%

Scale zoomed in to show the difference (bars do not start at zero).

What these numbers mean for you

Across all 420 arrows, 53.3% reached 1 ATR in their direction first. That is only slightly better than a coin flip. Bull arrows were close to 50/50, and bear arrows did a little better. A raw breakout arrow is not an entry signal on its own. That fits the purpose of the tool: many breaks fail.

The moves came quickly. The median signal reached 1 ATR one way or the other within 2 bars (about 30 minutes on M15). Only 0.5% of signals reached neither side within 20 bars. You will know quickly whether a breakout is working.

On the default settings the arrows came often: 32 a week in total, 14.7 bull and 17.3 bear. The Lab measured the arrows only. It did not measure the results of the FALSE or CONFIRMED labels, or trades that fade a trap.

How it works

  1. 1
Builds levels from the chosen source: swing pivots, a recent high-low box, or the prior day and week range.Box High and Low over DonchianLookback bars | swing pivots use PivotBars on each sideInputs: LevelSource, PivotBars, DonchianLookback
  2. 2
A close beyond a level by a small ATR buffer starts a pending breakout, once per level.Breakout up: Close > Level + BreakoutBufferATRMult x ATRInputs: ATRPeriod, BreakoutBufferATRMult
  3. 3
If a later close comes back across the level, the breakout is a false one, a trap.False if Close <= Level (up breakout) or Close >= Level (down breakout)
  4. 4
If price stays beyond the level through the confirm window of bars, the breakout is confirmed.Confirmed after ConfirmWindow bars without closing backInputs: ConfirmWindow

Records trap depth in ATR and keeps false versus confirmed counts for the last breakouts of each source.Depth = abs(furthest price - Level) / ATRInputs: StatsLookbackBreakouts, MaxHistoryBars

What it draws

  • Arrows (Bull Breakout) from buffer 0, drawn on the closed bar.
  • Arrows (Bear Breakout) from buffer 1, drawn on the closed bar.
  • Rectangles (Trap Zone) drawn as chart objects, not buffers — they are not readable by iCustom() in an EA.
  • Rectangles (Breakout Levels) drawn as chart objects, not buffers — they are not readable by iCustom() in an EA.
  • Rectangles (Breakout Status) drawn as chart objects, not buffers — they are not readable by iCustom() in an EA.
  • An on-chart panel (Trap Stats); values shown in the panel are not exposed as buffers.

How to read it

Install and first look

In MT5 choose File > Open Data Folder, then open MQL5\Indicators and copy the .ex5 file (118.5 KB) there. Refresh the Navigator and drag the indicator onto a chart. It draws on the main price chart, not in a subwindow.

How one breakout is tracked from level to verdict

Every breakout goes through the same steps:

How False Breakout Trap tracks one breakout
  1. 1Active levelUpper and lower lines from the chosen LevelSource
  2. 2Closed bar clears the levelBy more than BreakoutBufferATRMult x ATR, with no breakout of that level pending
  3. 3Arrow + BREAKOUT labelLevel line removed while pending; Trap Zone tracks the farthest price
  4. 4ClassifiedCONFIRMED after ConfirmWindow bars, or FALSE with trap depth in ATR
  5. 5Alert and panel updateFalse-breakout alert is on by default; the source's statistics refresh

Reading the arrow, the zone and the label together

The picture below shows a breakout that turns into a trap. The arrow marks the moment of the break. The trap is shown by the label that comes later.

Illustration of a typical signal: Bull Breakout that becomes a FALSE breakoutIllustration
Upper level (swing pivot)1.08800Trap ZoneBull Breakout arrowFALSE x ATR label
  • Arrow: a closed bar broke the level.
  • Trap Zone: shows how far price got beyond the level before it turned. A tall zone means the trap swept far past the level.
  • FALSE x ATR: the break failed. The number is the trap depth in ATR. CONFIRMED: the break held through the ConfirmWindow.

Three common misreads

  • "The level line vanished, the indicator is broken." It isn't. The line is removed while a breakout of that level is pending, or after a confirmed swing break. A missing line tells you a breakout is being tracked.
  • "The label changed, so it repaints." The arrow never moves. Only the status text goes from BREAKOUT to FALSE or CONFIRMED, which is how the tool is meant to work.
  • "The arrow is the trap signal." The arrow marks the breakout. The trap is the FALSE label that comes later.

Inputs to change first

  • LevelSource (default Swing pivot): picks which levels are drawn and alerted. The panel's statistics always include all four sources (swing pivot, prior day high/low, prior week high/low, Donchian box), so you can compare them before you switch.
  • BreakoutBufferATRMult (0.05, range 0.0-0.5): how far a close must clear the level. Raise it to ignore small pokes past the level and get fewer arrows.
  • ConfirmWindow (5, range 1-20): how many bars a breakout must last before it counts as confirmed. A larger value is stricter, so fewer breakouts are confirmed and confirmation comes later.
  • PivotBars (5, range 3-10) and DonchianLookback (20, range 10-100): these control the levels for the swing pivot and Donchian sources. Higher values give fewer, more significant levels.
  • StatsLookbackBreakouts (20, range 5-50): how many recent breakouts per source the panel uses. More breakouts give steadier rates that react more slowly.
  • ATRPeriod (14) sets the ATR used for the buffer and the trap depth. MaxHistoryBars (1500) sets how far back the indicator scans on load. Older breakouts and their objects are removed.

Alerts

AlertOnFalseBreakout is on by default. AlertOnBreakout (pending) and AlertOnConfirmed are off. Popups appear in the terminal's alert window, and sound plays by default. Turn on EnableAlertPush to get alerts on your phone. Push needs your MetaQuotes ID set in the terminal.

A decision rule for each signal

These rules are starting points the Lab has not tested.

  • Arrow: don't enter on the arrow alone. First check the panel's false breakout rate for your LevelSource. If more than half of its recent breaks failed, treat the new arrow as a likely trap and wait for the label.
  • CONFIRMED: consider the breakout side only if your own plan agrees. Place your stop beyond the level by at least the panel's average trap depth in ATR. A tighter stop sits inside the range where recent traps reached.
  • FALSE: don't chase the breakout side any more. Fading the trap is an idea you can forward-test. The Lab has not tested it.
  • Timing check: compare the panel's average bars to failure with your ConfirmWindow (default 5). This is a starting point to forward-test. The Lab has not tested it.

Key terms and guides

False breakout
A false breakout is when price closes beyond a support, resistance or range edge, can't stay there, and closes back inside the range or back on the original side of the level, often followed by a move the other way.
Entry Trigger
An entry trigger is the specific event on the chart, such as a candle closing past a level or price breaking a small swing, that tells you to open the trade now instead of only watching the setup.
Indicator buffer
An indicator buffer is the list of numbers an indicator stores, one value per candle, for each line, histogram or arrow it draws. Expert Advisors and alerts read these buffers to get the indicator's values.
Trend filter
A trend filter is a rule that lets a trade signal through only when it agrees with the direction of a chosen line, such as a slow moving average or a trend line. It does not create entries. It decides which entries you are allowed to take.
Symbol
A symbol is the short code a trading platform uses to name one tradable market, such as EURUSD for the euro against the US dollar or XAUUSD for gold. Every quote, chart and order is tied to exactly one symbol.
Price Swing
A price swing is one move in a single direction, from a turning low to a turning high or the reverse. You measure it in pips from one swing point to the next.

FAQ

Does False Breakout Trap repaint?

No repaint detected. In a 9 Jul 2026 – 8 Oct 2026 test on EURUSD M15 (Raw Trading Ltd real ticks), 420 signals were logged at bar close and re-read at the end of the test: 0 changed. Arrows print on the bar that closes the signal, with no delay.

Can I use False Breakout Trap in an EA?

Yes. Read buffer 0 (Bull Breakout) with iCustom() on bar 1 — the last closed bar.

Why can’t my EA read the zones?

Zones and the panel are chart objects, not indicator buffers, so iCustom() does not return them.

How do I get alerts on my phone?

Enter your MetaQuotes ID under Tools → Options → Notifications, tick "Enable push notifications", and keep the push alert input on.

Does it work on other pairs?

Tested on EURUSD only; other symbols not tested.

Does the label change mean False Breakout Trap repaints?

No. In the Lab's test, 0 of 420 arrows changed or moved after their bar closed. Only the status text updates, from BREAKOUT to FALSE or CONFIRMED, once the breakout is classified.

Which level source should I pick?

Leave it on Swing pivot at first and read the panel. It tracks the false breakout rate of all four sources at once, so you can switch to a source that has been trapping traders less often.

Does it work on gold, indices or crypto?

It loads on any MT5 symbol, but the Lab tested only EURUSD M15. On gold, indices or crypto, treat the panel's false-break rates as your own forward-test data.

Can I get an alert only when a breakout fails?

Yes, that is the default: only AlertOnFalseBreakout is on. Turn on EnableAlertPush if you also want the alert on your phone.

Changelog

  • 1.00Initial release: false breakout detection across four selectable level sources (swing pivot, prior day high/low, prior week high/low, Donchian box), with pending/false/confirmed classification, ATR-normalized trap. · 2026-10-09

Final verdict

Where it earns its place

The arrows held still in the repaint test, and price decided quickly after each one. That makes the breakout record trustworthy, and you learn fast whether a break worked. The real value is the panel. It shows the false-break rate of each of the four level sources, with the average trap depth in ATR and the average bars to failure.

Its limits

  • The arrows are breakout marks, not an edge. Their Lab result was close to a coin flip, and the arrows on their own have no trend filter.
  • The Lab tested one symbol and one timeframe (EURUSD M15). Gold, indices, other pairs and other timeframes are untested.
  • The tool gives you no stop or target. The FALSE and CONFIRMED labels were not measured as trade signals.
  • With the default StatsLookbackBreakouts of 20, each false-break rate rests on a small sample, so it can swing from week to week.
  • Theme changes your chart colours. Keep RestoreTheme on if you want your own colours back when you remove the indicator.

Who should skip it

Skip it if you want a ready buy/sell system or arrows to enter on directly. Skip it if you trade a market or timeframe you are not willing to forward-test yourself. On busy charts, 30+ arrows a week can be noise if you only want a few setups.

Settings to start with

On EURUSD M15, start with the defaults, because those are what the Lab tested. Keep only AlertOnFalseBreakout on, and spend a week watching which source the panel shows as most trap-prone.

The following are starting points the Lab has not tested. Compare each one with the default:

  • on H1 or H4, try LevelSource = prior day high/low;
  • on M5, try BreakoutBufferATRMult 0.1 to skip small pokes past the level;
  • try StatsLookbackBreakouts 40 for steadier panel rates.

An idea to pair it with

You could run Breakout Confirmation alongside it as a second opinion on the same breaks. The Lab has not tested the pair, so forward-test it first.
